The Waldheide is a large clearing in the middle of the Heilbronn city forest, which is ideal for hiking, running and cycling. The northern part of the Waldheide (from the Schafweg) is a "natural monument and priority zone for nature conservation", where you are only allowed to use official paths. In the southern part of the forest heather you can also walk across the clearing and enjoy the many beautiful flowers in summer. The point marked with this highlight on the map describes the parking lot and the main access side to the Waldheide.

The Waldheide is a clearing of around 50 hectares in the Heilbronn city forest. The area was set up as a parade ground from 1883 and was occupied by the US armed forces from 1951, who expanded the Waldheide into a base for Pershing IA medium-range nuclear missiles from 1974 onwards. As a result of the NATO double decision, the Pershing IA were replaced by Pershing II missiles from 1984 onwards.

In 1985, an accident with three fatalities occurred at the facility, also known as Fort Redleg, when a rocket stage exploded. This incident sparked a public debate in the Federal Republic of Germany about the dangers of the Pershing system and gave broad impetus to the peace movement.

As a result of the 1987 INF Treaty, the US Army withdrew by 1991. The area was renatured by 1997 and is now a local recreation area for the people of Heilbronn.
