The church was consecrated in 1212. Otto von Bismarck was baptized here in 1815.

Baptistery of Otto von Bismarck. The restoration is largely carried out through donations and sponsors.

The associated park was completely destroyed in the Elbe flood in 2013 and has not been restored to this day, at the end of August 2021. Although a large public building sign promises this.

      Incredibly a shame.

We were lucky and got a tour from a dedicated woman from Schönhauser.

The church inside is very impressive and an absolute must to see.

Village Church of St. Marien and Willebrord

In the 12th century, Dutch settlers settled on the Elbe and began diking the Elbe. They founded the village of Schönhausen at its current location. The village church of St. Marien and Willebrord also dates from this period.

In 1212, Bishop Segebodo von Havelberg consecrated the Romanesque brick church to St. Willebrord. The building, which has retained its late Gothic character, shows a three-aisled basilica with a broad west transept tower and a square chancel with apse. In 1562 the place became property of the Bismarcks, who also received patronage over the church. In April 1815, the future Chancellor, Prince Otto von Bismarck, was born here and was baptized in this church. In addition, numerous epitaphs of the Bismarck family have been preserved in the church. The church was damaged during the Thirty Years' War. The damage was repaired between 1665 and 1712. As a result, the interior received baroque furnishings, the pulpit, the altar and the state gallery.

The wooden crucifix and the sandstone baptismal font date from the early 13th century.
