The Vredespad runs along a Scheldt meander along the Doornhammeke.
In the 1980s, the Cold War raged in full force. The great powers expanded their arsenal of nuclear weapons. New nuclear weapons would also be placed in Belgium. This madness gave rise to the creation of the peace movement. The movement quickly became a household name.
The small Zevergem was also not indifferent. About 20 people from Zevergem set up the Peace working group. With their actions, the working group regularly drew attention to the senseless arms race.
One of the actions is still visible to this day.
Thirty years ago, on Sunday 28 June 1987, 50 walnut trees were planted at 't Doornhammeke in Zevergem, as a sign of resistance against nuclear weapons and hope for the future. This road was given the name Vredespad. Zevergem then wrote a piece of history. Since October 1, 2017, this piece of history has been given a new future.
