Settled on remains from the Bronze Age and a Visigothic settlement, this large fortress built in the 13th century is located on top of a hill.

It was built by the Order of Calatrava after the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa, becoming the headquarters of the order and one of the most important defensive fortresses in Castile.

More than a simple fortress, it is a complex that included a church, a convent, a hostel, a town and an external enclosure, all protected by an extensive wall.
