The Maas-Waal canal is, as the name implies, a canal that connects the Maas with the Waal. The canal is approximately 13.5 kilometers long and runs from Heumen to the north and ends at Weurt (west of Nijmegen). Both the connection to the Maas and the Waal is via locks (lock Heumen and lock Weurt). The connection of the Maas and the Maas-Waalkanaal forms the three provinces point between Gelderland, Limburg and Noord-Brabant.

The lock is located between the village of Weurt and the Nijmegen harbor and industrial estate at the Waal estuary, just south of the Noordkanaalhaven. The lock complex is designed as a double lock. The old lock (East lock), which was built between 1923 and 1928, has roller gates and the new lock (West lock), which was built around 1975, has lifting doors.
