highest natural elevation in East Friesland (18.6 m)

      THE BALL MOUNTAIN

The Kugelberg is still the best-known (and at around 18 m one of the highest) hills in East Friesland. In the 1950s, when the Hollsand was still a destination for whole families, it suffered greatly from the leisure activities of the many visitors. When there was snow in winter, there was a wonderful toboggan run here.

At Easter, the last Easter eggs are rolled down the mountain and everyone is then eaten together. Over the course of the year, the young people (as so-called "hooligans") tested the bikes they had put together here again and again. When the time for mopeds came, the nature conservation authorities fenced off the Kugelberg and dumped deadwood on the egg and toboggan run. Then came the Kugelberg to rest and shrubbery, heather and grasses formed again.

In the 1970s, the district of Leer bought the first areas and attempts were made to direct visitors by building barriers. On the old roads and paths, visitors did not accept the barriers and partially removed them. The interest of the population changed over the next few years. Through television and general motorisation, leisure time behavior changed and people withdrew more and more from Holland.
