The green splendor of the Mastenbos also houses an unexpected heritage treasure: a very complete German trench line from 1917 with numerous bunkers. This World War I line was fully mapped using 53 aerial photographs taken by German Lieutenant Josef Zimmermann in January 1918. These photographs were not discovered until 2007!

This resulted in 476 above-ground military relics and 10 km of trenches throughout the region. The Mastenbos alone is good for about 70 bunkers and 4.8 km in total of trenches. Or: more trenches than in the entire Westhoek combined. This is not only unique in Belgium, but even in Europe.
