The construction of the Hennedamm in its present form was completed in 1955. The design and dimensions of the dam crest have not changed significantly since then. Although the Hennesee, and thus also the dam, is primarily a technical structure, the lake has always had the function of a popular recreational and leisure destination. He will continue to perform this task in the future, while orienting himself to today's requirements for modern leisure time demands. With events such as the HenneSeefest, the ITH-Hennesee triathlon and the HenneOpenAir, which was held in 2015, as part of the HenneErleben event, it becomes clear that the lake is particularly popular as a backdrop for a large number of events.
The remodeled and widened dam crown presents itself today as a free area, which offers enough space for events as well as for tourists and visitors. In the middle of the dam crown, the usable area was widened from 6 to over 10 meters. The experience of the dam from the dam crown was u.a. clearly elaborated by the open design of the sea-side railing. As an unmistakable design feature, fish motifs can be found both on the asphalt surface and in the shape of the hedgerow elements. In the loosely distributed hedges benches are integrated as seating, which provide a sheltered place to stay and allow an unobstructed view of the lake. Light steles emphasize the course of the dam crest and, in addition to the design enhancement, provide the necessary lighting.
For giddiness-free visitors, the viewing platform in the middle of the dam crest offers a special experience. The construction stands out as a striking landmark on the land side 7.50 meters above the dam crown and allows a spectacular view in the direction of the city center. As the upper end of the Himmelstreppe the observation deck is also set in scene by a handrail lighting and is literally another highlight on the Henne-Boulevard.
