The name of the summit could be one of the oldest place names on the Rennsteig. Donner refers to the Germanic god Donar, while Hauk, coming from Middle High German, means Berg. On the summit there was probably a place of worship in honor of the Donar god. Miners are said to have found a stone ax and a hand millstone here while mining ore.
