Best Hikes to Asphalt Chapel

Tips

  • The asphalt chapel was designed and built on the occasion of the Upper Bavarian Culture Days in Altötting in 2001. Since June 2002 it has been at the edge of the forest near Etsdorf/Opf. in the district of Amberg-Sulzbach and is accessible all year round. It is the only building that consists exclusively of asphalt (mastic asphalt). Sacrificial candles can be lit in it. The asphalt chapel festival takes place every year at the beginning of May, with the blessing of a new artists' cross on the "Kreuze-Weg".
Every two years over Christmas, the "Christmas tree ball sky" can be seen.

  • Inconspicuous from the outside, magical from the inside when the Christmas tree balls conjure up a great play of colours. Very crowded on weekends and public holidays
