    Hiking

The Whin Sill is a huge layer of very hard volcanic rock, called dolerite. This rock was formed millions of years ago. Hot, liquid magma pushed itself between softer layers of rock. The wind and weather have eroded the softer rock. As a result, the rock-hard Whin Sill now juts out of the landscape like a spectacular wall.

This is a great place to walk along Hadrians wall, above the Whin Sill to Sycamore gap.
