Heath area typical of the landscape with a dense juniper stand and a real sheepfold. Here you can dream in the historic landscape

Why are Heidschnucken out and about in the heath?

Heath has to be cared for and of course also has to look very inviting, because both tourists and Heidjer people are happy about the shimmering purple sight year after year when the heather blooms again. Luckily, there are a few hard-working helpers to look after the heather: the Heidschnucken.

Heidschnucken have been around for a very long time, for more than 5000 years. They come from the wild goat, the mouflon. There are white-horned and gray-horned Heidschnucks.
There are 50 gray-horned heath snails in the herd in the Soltau juniper park, which skillfully eat away at weeds and withered heather. However, they leave the purple-flowering heather standing. They are true gardeners of nature. But stop! If you look closely into the herd, you can see four animals that somehow don't fit in visually. There are 4 goats. They are a little bigger than the Heidschnucken, white with a little red-brown in their fur and you can tell that these 4 ladies always do a little “their own thing”. The goats have a very specific job: They eat small, wild-growing tree plants. This means that maples and the like cannot spread across the heath and the heath has the typical juniper-birch mix look that we are familiar with. If you stand on the heath and the Heidschnucken come a little closer, you can hear the relaxing sound of plucking. Whether heathland sheep or goat, they take their job very seriously and eat as much as they can. Heidschnucken are quite shy, so they are not really suitable for petting. Mr. Worch-Rohweder recommends keeping an arm's length away when approaching the herd.
