The Sacro Monte di Brissago is a special place in the canton of Ticino, a place of peace and strength, a meeting place of faith. A pilgrimage site located directly on the holy mountain and a meeting point for pilgrims from all over the world. The main complex was built at the beginning of the 18th century and is considered one of the most important points of contact in the Swiss canton of Ticino.
The central building is the Santa Maria Addolorata Chapel, made in the late Baroque style. A barrel vault and the octagonal drum dome welcome visitors; the vestibule alone is a true work of art. The centerpiece is the imposing high altar made entirely of polychrome marble, which, according to the surviving writings, dates back to 1773.
The nave is decorated with frescoes by Guiseppe Antonio Felice Orelli. The four frescoes are elaborately restored originals from the 17th century. The various chapels are all located in the immediate vicinity of the main chapel and are all connected by footpath.
