The Witches' Tower served as a prison for a time. According to legend, the last witch, Anna Elsa Baldewin, spent a year in the tower in 1668. She was presumably sentenced because she was well-versed in herbs, which people found frightening. The prisoners were admitted through the lower hatch, and food was dropped through a hole in the ceiling of the lower tower room.
