From the 13th century, Isny was equipped with a city wall, the length of which was given in 1826 as 1,326 m. Today around 740 m of the former defenses and fortifications are still standing. Wooden battlements that led around the entire city on the inside of the wall in the Middle Ages offered protection from attackers as well as wind and weather. Nowadays, visitors can explore the parapet walkways, some of which can be walked on, including the original loopholes on the lower city wall.

With the fortification of a mighty ring of walls, the settlement near the Benedictine monastery became a founding town in the 13th century. Towers, moats and ditches reinforced the defense system and four gates regulated access. The medieval oval of city wall and fortifications has been largely preserved and encloses Isny's old town. The shingle-covered wooden battlements once led completely around the city. In an emergency, the guards were protected from attackers' bullets, but also from wind and weather. The narrow passages on the northern city wall between the water gate and the Espantor are still accessible today.
