The Gildehauser ridge, which towers almost 100 meters above the surrounding fields, is a very suitable location for a windmill. However, because there had been a windmill on the Bentheim ridge since the 14th century and there were also various watermills in the area, it took until around 1618 for a post windmill to be built on the Gildehauser ridge. This stood to the east of the current Ostmühle.
The old post mill was destroyed in 1746. Then the current stone east mill was built.
