The picturesque beach is a suitable place for this monument to the famous local poet. As wikipedia summarizes:

"António Pereira Nobre (Porto, August 16, 1867 - Foz do Douro, March 18, 1900), better known as António Nobre, was a Portuguese poet whose work is part of the ultra-romantic, symbolist, decadentist and nostalgic currents ( interested in the resurgence of homeland values) of the 19th century Portuguese generation, whose main work, Só (Paris, 1892), is marked by lamentation and nostalgia, imbued with subjectivism, but simultaneously softened by the presence of a thread of self-irony and with the rupture with the formal structure of the poetic genre in which it is inserted, translated into the use of colloquial discourse and the strophic and rhythmic diversification of poems. Despite its poetic production showing a clear influence by Almeida Garrett and Júlio Dinis, it decidedly in the canons of French symbolism. His main contribution to Lusophone symbolism was the introduction of alternating between the symbolists' refined vocabulary and a more colloquial one , a reflection of his childhood with the northern people.
