In 1714 the palace was built as an observatory for the Hessian Landgrave Karl. The Palais Bellevue, built by Paul du Ry, bears witness to the collapsed Kassel Oberneustadt, which Landgrave Karl had built for the Huguenots 300 years ago. The Brothers Grimm Museum has been at home here since 1972. A place where tourists, but also German scholars from all over the world, who were primarily interested in Grimm's fairy tales, came together. The Grimmwelt has been the new museum for the brothers since 2015.

The Palais Bellevue is the only city palace in Kassel from the early 18th century that has changed little on the outside to this day. The small city palace was built in 1714 for Landgrave Karl. He used it for his astronomical studies. It also served as a residence for various members of the royal family, including King Jérôme of Westphalia.
