The Schlossplatz in Limbach is the still-to-be-guessed relic of a castle, which was probably built in the 12th century by order of the Lords of Düren as a Hohenstaufen imperial castle. When the castle belonged to the Archbishopric of Mainz (1271), it became the property of the royal family of Würzburg (1310) before it was again assigned to the Archdiocese of Mainz (1318) and ultimately under the rule of Count Palatine Otto II and the Electoral Palatinate stood (1488). During the Peasants' War of 1525, the Hellen Haufen castle, which was led by Götz von Berlichingen, was burned out. The ruins, which were still recognizable until then, were finally torn down in 1771.
