          Sacred Heart Pilgrimage Church

The only Sacred Heart pilgrimage in Bavaria today is the Sacred Heart Church on the mountain west of the town of Velburg.

The beginnings of the church and pilgrimage site began in 1696 with the construction of a crucifixion group on the 563 meter high Hohenberg. In the same year, a depiction of the Holy Sepulchre was created in the form of an open roundel; the mountain had now become Calvary or Cross Mountain.

The fact that the construction of a small enclosed chapel, in which the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass could also be offered, was successful is thanks to the brothers Andreas and Arsenius Müller, who came from Erbach in the Rheingau.

The two pious hermits, filled with religious zeal and youthful energy, now pursued the planned church construction with great vigor. It is said to have been around 1730 when an enclosed chapel was built over the Holy Sepulchre, known as the Little Cross Church. The church was expanded again in 1771. The extension was directly attached to the burial chapel. For the new church, which was blessed in 1775, the patronage was given to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and a picture of the Sacred Heart was chosen as the altarpiece. This picture has a special feature: the painter Conrad Wild placed the picture of Christ in a frame and thus created a picture within a picture.

Permission for another extension was granted in 1791, construction began in 1792 and was completed in 1795. The octagonal extension (octagon) was directly attached to the existing church, today's presbytery. The Rococo high altar was reworked and adapted by the sculptor Adam Bittner from Freystadt. The ceiling frescoes were created by Lorenz Joseph Forster. The large fresco shows the veneration of the Sacred Heart of Jesus by the estates.
The last construction measure was the construction of an octagonal tower over the burial chapel in 1854, similar to the turret on the octagon. In 1979, the parish had a new people's altar erected, which meant that the communion grille had to be removed. In 1996, the two stained glass windows depicting the diocesan saints St. Willibald and St. Walburga, which had been removed during the renovation in 1966, were reinstated.
