The St. Catherine's Church is the third highest (104.7m) church building in Belgium. Characteristic is the red Kempen brick, which is rarely used for towers of that size. The tallest brick tower in Belgium is that of the Church of Our Lady in Bruges (115 meters). The St. Catherine's Church of Hoogstraten is built in the typical red brick of the region.

The church did not suffer from the religious riots in the 16th century, but on October 23, 1944, the tower was dynamited by the retreating German troops just before the liberation. Reconstruction took place from 1952 to 1958. The church has been a protected monument since 1936.

The St. Catherine's Church is "THE" cathedral of the Kempen.

The Katharina has defined the skyline of Hoogstraten for about 500 years.

The impressive church was built between 1524 and 1546 by order of Count Antoon de Lalaing and Countess Elisabeth van Culemborg. The plan was by Rombout Keldermans, one of the architects of the Antwerp cathedral. The church with its 104.70 meter high tower has a length of 80 meters and is often called the “triumph of the bricks”. It is therefore not without reason that it is one of the tallest brick buildings in the world.

Imposing church, unfortunately there is a lot of traffic through the place.
