"The pilgrimage church of St. Apollinaris in Remagen, built by the Cologne cathedral builder Ernst Friedrich Zwirner, can certainly be described as one of the most important new churches of the 19th century in the Rhineland.

The previous church of St. Martin had to be demolished due to its dilapidation. The foundation stone was laid in 1839 and the shell was completed in 1843. The extensive equipment required time. The interior of the church is completely decorated with wall paintings (mainly in the fresco technique). The church was completed and consecrated in 1857.

St. Apollinaris can be described as a unique work of art, entirely in the neo-Gothic style, in which every detail, whether confessional, pulpit, main portal or high altar, is coordinated. The wonderful panoramic location with a wide view over the Rhine and the well-kept gardens form a harmonious picture..."
