The Kreuzberg church, built in the Gothic style, was built in 1463 in place of a pilgrimage chapel, already mentioned in 1430, on behalf of the lords of Seckendorff at Schloss Hallerndorf. The Kreuzberg has always been the destination of devout pilgrims, who carried their worries and fears to the crucified Redeemer, asking for blessings and salvation.
Thus, in the heyday of the Kreuzberg Pilgrimage, up to 23 pilgrimages in one day are attested. In front of the façade on the northwest side of the church, an outside altar had been erected for this purpose for a so-called "Beimesse". Although the pilgrimage to Kreuzberg has declined considerably in our day, parishes still traditionally arrive to pilgrimage services.

The "pilgrimage church to the Holy Cross" has become a household name for pilgrims from all over the world. It lies on the Franconian Way of St. James, which leads from Kronach via Forchheim to Nuremberg. The gothic pilgrimage church from 1463 enchants its visitors. Between 1720 - 1745 the equipment of the Kreuzberg church was completely baroque. The church may call itself a Frankish jewel on the Way of St. James. Unfortunately, it is usually closed for safety reasons and because of the seclusion, so that the Jakobspilger unfortunately can not visit the beautiful church. However, the pilgrim temple is located in a niche next to the main entrance. On the outer walls of the pilgrimage church there are fifteen niches for the 14 Stations of the Cross and, as a special feature, a 15th station depicting the finding of the Cross by Empress Helena.
