In the last kilometers of Passo Gavia, going up from Ponte di Legno, it is worth stopping for a few seconds outside one of the last hairpin bends to observe the panorama over the valley, with the fascinating Black Lake just below.

Many legends were once transmitted from generation to generation concerning the birth of the two lakes of the Gavia pass, Lago Nero (here) and Lago Bianco (at the top). One of them says that the two small alpine lakes were born from the passion between Bianchina and Nerino, two young lovers who lived in these mountains. Their happiness provoked the envy of the sour Pinotta who, with the intention of revenge, asked the help of the magician Viz. The latter triggered a strong snowstorm on the Gavia pass, so powerful that the two unfortunate young people were transformed into two ice statues. It is then that the Spirit of the Waters intervenes. Moved by the sad fate of the young people, he tried to undo the spell by filling his hand with water which he threw with all his might on the two petrified lovers. The ice statues began to melt in increasingly abundant tears until they formed the two small alpine lakes, since then called Bianco and Nero.
Legend has it that, to this day, the two young people reappear each night around their respective pond to continue their amorous discussions interrupted by the storm.
