The Theater der Nacht was created in 1988 by the artist couple Ruth Schmitz and Heiko Brockhausen. In the mid-1990s, the theater group, which was founded as a touring theater, discovered the former Northeim fire station and made the proposal to the city of Northeim to convert the building into a puppet theater.
