The Theater der Nacht was created in 1988 by the artist couple Ruth and Heiko Brockhausen. In the mid-1990s, the theater group, which was founded as a touring theater, discovered the former Northeim fire station and suggested to the city of Northeim that the building be converted into a puppet theater.

Four years later, in May 1999, work began on converting the building into a puppet theater. After about two years of reconstruction, the Theater of the Night was opened.
