The Herne-Ost lock belongs - from the Rhine - to the last of the five channel stages of the Rhine-Herne Canal in Herne. The twin lock is at channel kilometer 37,26. Herne-Ost was commissioned in 1914 as the easternmost of the original seven canal stages of the Rhine-Herne Canal.
The lock system Herne East was renewed in the years 1986 to 1992. The new lock chambers are each 190 meters long and 12 meters wide. The Drempeltiefe (water depth at the upper gate) is 4 meters. Towards the top, a rotating segment gate completes the process. Stemming gates close the chambers to the underwater. The difference between upper and underwater is 12.8 meters. A smuggling takes about 14 minutes, the entry and exit times of the ships not included. The canal locks are technically interesting and worth seeing structures, so also the lock Herne east. The paths at the lock are all well navigable, so that the lock can be planned as a stopover in both mountain bike and trekking bike tours.
The lock process can be observed from below the helm structure of several places. The entrance and exit in the upper water can be observed from the operating routes directly in front of the lock. The entrance and exit in the underwater can be seen very well from the bridge directly in front of the lower Stemmtoren. From here you can get through a gate a few meters into the lock system below the helm, from where you have a reasonably good view into the lock chambers.

The lock has been drained due to renovation work, so you can marvel at its entire size 👍
