Rottenstein is now the smallest district of Aidhausen, actually a former branch of the former independent municipality of Friesenhausen, which Rottenstein brought with it into the marriage to Aidhausen as a not insignificant dowry. The place, with what was then Rotenstein Castle, has a historic past. We find out that the center of administration for the Haßgau was located there from a newspaper article that Paul Sörgel published in Boten vom Haßgau in 2000. Rotenstein Castle was probably built in the 11th/12th century. Built in the century. The first owners were the Counts of Wildberg. The fortress came to the Hennebergers through an inheritance contract. Count Berthold v. Henneberg combined his own and the former Wildberg possessions in Haßgau as the Rotenstein office for joint administration. After inheritance disputes among the Hennebergers, Bishop Albrecht II of Würzburg was able to purchase a large part of it for 90,000 guilders.Source: aidhausen.de/DE/Rottenstein.html

From 1390 onwards, the Rotenstein office was mortgaged, which was an important source of income for the prince-bishops, who were always in financial difficulties during the 15th century. After Bishop Rudolf v. Scharenberg and his successor Lorenz von Bibra had largely paid off the bishopric's debts, the offices were no longer pledged but instead paid officials were appointed who had to pay all income into the bishopric. In 1525 the castle was razed by rebellious farmers from the Bildhäuser Bunch and was not rebuilt. Bishop Konrad von Thüngen had an office building replika väska built below Rotenstein in the hamlet of Rottenstein as the administrative headquarters. Due to the conditions of the Peace of Westphalia, a reorganization of the monastery administration in Haßgau was necessary. The Rotenstein office was divided and the Stadtlauringen office and the Hofheim office were formed.Source: aidhausen.de/DE/Rottenstein.html
