Wichmannsburg derives its name from Count Wichmann Billung, who inherited this area from his father, Hermann Billung, and built a protective castle against the Slavs here around 950.
The church dedicated to St. George (fighter against all evil) was probably built soon after. On its north wall, it still shows today what it might have looked like originally: beautiful field stone masonry with small arched windows.
In 1659 the church collapsed during a service. It was rebuilt with a brick wall in front on the south side and enlarged windows. Further modifications were made:
    around 1750 new lattice tower
1869 new choir room and raised floor
1960 Renewal of the stalls, pulpit and organ

The St. George's Church has a gothic carved altar that was created around 1500 (probably in the workshop of Lewin Storch from Hildesheim). In the predella you can see a painted St. George and St. Mauritius, in the middle part a crucifixion rich in figures and next to it 4 saints. In the wings there are wooden figures depicting the 12 apostles. In the essay, Maria stands in a halo. There is also a replica of a Lübeck renaissance chandelier, which was made around 1981, in the central aisle of the church. The baptismal font of the church is from 1986.
