The historic Lüneburg town hall with its famous court arbor, the former council chamber, which was designed by an unknown master, can be regarded as one of the most outstanding architectural monuments in northern Germany. It was started around 1230, expanded over the centuries and is considered the largest medieval town hall in northern Germany.

The "new" town hall building in Lüneburg dates from the second half of the 16th century, while the oldest surviving structures in the complex were built in the middle of the 13th century. The court arbor, prince's hall, old archive, chancellery and mayor's chamber date from the Gothic period.
