The former monastery in the north-western district of St. Jöris was founded around 1274. Donated by Winrich and Jutta von Kinzweiler, the monastery was built on a clearing in the Propsteier forest. The village of St. Jöris developed around the monastery over the centuries. The name "Jöris" is another form of Georg, Saint George was the medieval patron saint of knights.
