The episcopal city of Passau has always been a center of religious life for Bavaria and Austria. In 1611, Prince-Bishop Archduke Leopold of Austria brought a picture of the Blessed Mother to his royal residence with a tenderly embraced child. This was from Lucas Cranach d. Ä., One of the most important German painters, was probably created after 1537.
"Mariahilf" is an essential part of the particularly flourishing in the Baroque worship of the Mother of God. Hundreds of daughter pilgrimages were created, especially Amberg / Oberpfalz, Innsbruck (there the original painting by Lucas Cranach), Vienna and Munich.
