Doveren is probably well over 2000 years old, as its name derives from the Celtic-Germanic Dubra (German for water or on the water), which the Romans Latinized and made Dubris. In this context, the close relationship by name to the port city of Dover on the English Channel in the county of Kent, England should also be seen. Its name has changed over the centuries from Dubra through Dubris, Dofras, Doferum, Douer, Dovor and Dower to what is now Dover.
