The gate, built between 1350 and 1400, was part of the city's medieval defense system. It was badly damaged by a lightning strike around 1800. The late Gothic brick building was rebuilt a little smaller and less adorned due to tight budgets. In 1980, the Greifswald Gate was extensively renovated.
