After the First World War, many countries in Europe built elaborate border fortifications. It was believed that the deterrent effect of these modern defenses would prevent future conflicts. From 1936, the expansion on the western German border took place in several phases. Propagated by the National Socialists as a "protective or peace wall in the West", the 630-kilometer-long West Wall between Kleve and Basel was part of the German Reich's war preparations.
A section of the west wall runs from the state border at Hellental-Kehr to Udenbreth. Numerous bunkers in varying states of preservation are located on individual ridges in a forest area and on meadows. Source: kuladig.de/Object-View/A-EK-20080730-0156
