In November 1997 the motorway border crossing was opened by the Czech Minister for Transport and Telecommunications Martin Ríman and the German Federal Minister for Transport Matthias Wissmann in the presence of numerous guests of honor. The road from Nuremberg via Waidhaus to Prague was named "Via Carolina" in reference to its historical significance. As a long-distance road, it should once represent the seamless connection between Paris and Moscow. The need for this road link is justified by the fact that the traffic forecasts that were determined when planning the A6 have already been exceeded.
