St James' church was built in the 12th century although it likely lies on the site of a Saxon church. It sits in the rural village of Shere, an exceptionally picturesque settlement nestled in the Surrey Hills AONB. Shere straddles the River Tillingbourne.

Find the church up a pretty cobbled lane and head through the lych gate designed by Edward Lutyens. It's the Norman tower that first catches the eye and can be seen from many parts of the village.

Within the church is the remains of the cell which housed the anchoress, Christine Carpenter. Anchoresses/rites were early forms of monks and nuns who would be walled, often permanently, into cells inside churches.

Lovely little village, with cute tea rooms and small shops. Busier than usual currently (Autumn 2020) due to broken bridges bringing all local traffic through these roads.

Beautiful historic church. If you're in the area, make sure that you go inside and see the beautiful altar. The church is well looked after by the local community, and the cemetery around it is worth a visit too.
