The Millstätter See is a lake north of the Drautal near Spittal in Carinthia (Austria). It is 588 m above sea level, is 11.5 kilometers long and up to 1.8 kilometers wide and is Carinthia's second largest lake after Lake Wörthersee, the deepest at 141 meters and the most water-rich lake at 1204.5 million cubic metres. Larger settlements on the lake can only be found on the northern shore, including Seeboden, Millstatt and Döbriach, the three largest towns.

The modern depiction of the legendary founder of Millstatt, who lived around the year 800, was designed by Prof. Giorgio IGNE (Sacile/Friuli) in 1994. According to legend, Domitian, who converted to Christianity, had 1000 pagan statues (Milie Statuae) thrown into the lake, which is where the name "Millstatt" comes from. (from information board)
