Between the Haachtsesteenweg and the Watermolenstraat lie the quiet remains of the former castle of Lille, once a fief of the Duchy of Brabant. From the medieval domain, an 18th-century coach house, an old stable wing, a rubble stone enclosure wall and the former water mill remain today, picturesquely hidden on the edge of the Hellebos.

The only remains of the medieval castle on the field are the wall and coach house after the demolition in 1832 by the last owner M. Dellafaille d'Huysse. On the Ferraris map of 1777 and on the Villaret map of 1745 you can clearly see the 'Château de Lille', the inn and the castle farm. The castle farm is still there. The Romanesque chapel shown on the map collapsed in 1909 and was subsequently demolished.
On both maps you can see the village of Lille (Leele) and the Molenbeek as it was then. You also see ponds at and near the castle and on the Villaret map you can clearly see the 'moulin' drawn in. The stream has since been straightened and placed a lot further into the forest. The ponds have been filled in, but have been made somewhat visible again on the site of the current water purification station.
The watermill dates back to the early 14th century, the current building is from the 17-18th century and the undershot wheel worked until around 1900. Today the mill building serves as a private residence and you can find it a bit hidden at the back of the garden on the place where the watermolenstraat enters the forest (watermolenstraat 3). I'll have to go back to the Hellebos to tell a lot more about all this because I haven't been able to get close enough to the mill building to take a picture of it yet.
The castle site is on the inventory of valuable architectural heritage but is not protected in any way.
