70 prehistoric horses have already been found in the oil shale, which was once 200 meters thick. Around 2,000 to 3,000 finds are brought to light every year. A guided tour of the pit itself is highly recommended. Here you can quickly get an overview of why the Messel Pit is a unique place in the world for fossil finds. Rating: Highly recommended!

The fossils of the pit Messel date back to about 50 million years ago. This was about 15 million years after the dinosaurs became extinct. The Urpferdchen and other finds are mammals.
