In 1937 the first oil was found on the outskirts of Hamburg in the Vier- und Marschlanden in the Hanseatic city. A year later the production company was founded and regular oil production in Hamburg could begin. This is the only mining company in Hamburg and is operated by Neptune Energy.

The oil fields around the Kirchwerder Wiesen have been actively developed since the late 1930s. A few thousand tons of crude oil are still believed to be here.
