It has been talked about for a good 50 years, now it is here: the new Lahn Bridge between Weststadt and Nordstadt, extending the Sudetenlandstraße. The building, a slender bridge for pedestrians and cyclists, will create completely new connections for the two districts.
The new foot and cycle path bridge brings the banks of the Lahn into public awareness and represents an important connection for the residents of the neighboring north and west town. The bridge also offers pedestrians and cyclists the opportunity to cross the Lahn more easily and easier to get to the city center.
The bridge is not only the start of the redesign on the Lahn, but is also an ambassador for all further development steps in the coming years. The entire banks of the Lahn will be opened up to the public and the city's waterfront can be experienced.
The bridge is named after the democratic pioneer and sports pioneer Christoph Rübsamen, founder of the Gießen rowing company. The proposed name by Rolf Beck, honorary member of the Gießen regatta club, had prevailed among 152 proposed names from the city society.
It is a new landmark for Gießen and connects two large, not exactly privileged districts of Gießen - the north and the west city. There are already concrete plans for joint projects between the primary school in Gießen West (Weststadt) and the Georg Büchner School (primary school in the northern part of the city), which could now be visited more easily and quickly thanks to the bridge.

Very successful bridge architecture! The Christoph-Rübsamen-Steg is now almost a Giessen landmark 👌
