Transitioning from the last remaining section of the sun-bleached Serpentine Grass ecosystem, which once covered most of the windswept dune landscape that now is San Francisco, the Ecology trail transitions into the shady forests of Monterey Cypress and Monterey Pine trees that were planted at the end of the 19th century by the US Army to create an awe-inspiring backdrop for their fort in the former Spanish military Presidio. It is still impressive how much natural areas were preserved in this otherwise densely populated metropolis that cannot grow beyond the waterfront limits on three sides.
