At the foot of the Mýrdalsjökull, under which the infamous Katla volcano is located, there is a small camping site in a green overgrown tuff gorge. Just the 15 km long drive from Vík, which can be done with any car, is a special experience. It passes bizarre rock formations and along the way you enjoy a great view of the glacial river Mulakvisl (the last so-called jökulhlaup – glacier breakout – was in July 2011).

From here, you can hike to the inland ice. It takes 4 hours to walk there and back. Waterproof clothing is recommended as it likes to rain.

The impressions on this tour are fantastic. But I would advise against anyone doing this circular tour of Maelifell. It is better to go back to Pakgil the same way after the detour to the glacier. We didn't do it and then had to go down daredevil gravel slopes over a 50cm wide ridge (made of gravel). Almost at the end, the current and depth of the river to be crossed was so strong and high that it was impossible. A climb, with the slopes slipping, was the only way back to Pakgil.
Conclusion: Wonderful tour, but it has nothing to do with hiking. Better to take the easier way back 😉
