The area is located in the extensive Allern lowlands and used to be regularly exposed to floods. By regulating and damming the Aller it became possible to better drain the agricultural land. The plank breach is also affected by the lowering of the groundwater level. The original alluvial forest is gradually changing to a deciduous oak-hornbeam forest. A former soil extraction point has been incorporated into the protected area adjacent to the forest. The water is subject to its own dynamic development and may not be used for leisure purposes.
