In Leopoldsdorf / Marchfeld, Agrana operates a sugar factory that has been in existence since 1901 with 150 employees (and 100 more during the campaign, the beet delivery time as of August 2020). As in the past, the operator is currently considering closing the factory due to insufficient capacity utilization. The cultivation area for sugar beet in Lower Austria has fallen from around 40,000 hectares (in 2017) to 26,000 hectares with a high area yield (2020). Agrana also operates the Tulln sugar factory in Lower Austria and only wants to continue operating the Leopoldsdorf plant in 2021 if the cultivation area increases to at least 38,000 hectares
