Tips

  • Next to the town hall is the Münchhausen Museum in the "Schulenburg", built around 1300. In the museum you can see exhibits from the personal property of Münchhausen as well as over 1150 book editions of his stories.

  • A very lovingly designed museum in which you can see many exhibits from Münchhausen. On the upper floor, safely secured behind glass, is Münchhausen's mother's handwritten cookbook. 49 different country editions and almost 1200 books about the stories of Münchhausen. A really successful museum. It's worth it!

  • Built around 1300, the "Schulenburg" castle once housed the town administrator's residence and the estate's tithe barn during the reign of Hieronymus Carl Friedrich Freiherr von Münchhausen.Today, the Münchhausen Museum is located there, commemorating not only the storyteller's unique tales but also Bodenwerder's historic past. The building is one of the oldest in the town, whose medieval structure was otherwise largely destroyed. The former Schulenburg castle underwent at least three reconstructions in the years 1400, 1772, and 1871, resulting in several changes to the form of the original multi-story stone tower house with stepped gables typical of the period. Similar to the Brennerhaus, the northwestern wall of the original building formed part of the town wall. This wall was uncovered in its further course during an emergency rescue operation in 1999, which also indicates a special function of the building. The medieval manor was likely the seat of the Homburg city governor. Above the entrance to this building is a sandstone plaque bearing the monograms of Hieronymus Carl Friedrich Freiherr von Münchhausen and Jacobine von Münchhausen, née von Dunten, as well as the year of the second renovation of the Schulenburg.During the third renovation in 1871, the tanner Freise built a half-timbered structure on the upper floor. The installation of numerous skylights and hatches further expanded the building's function as a tannery, warehouse, and drying room for hides. By 2003, the historically valuable building had been carefully restored and now houses the Münchhausen Museum.
