It was always located outside the city walls and was the town's church for a long time, as the collegiate church was reserved for the canonesses' convent. With the construction of a second church in the town, St. George's Church lost importance. Since the collegiate church has also been available to citizens since the Reformation, it is no longer used for regular services.

The church was built in the 9th century. It now consists of a Gothic nave and an older Romanesque tower. The interior includes, among other things, the Gothic wooden figure of St. George and extensive rural interior painting. The baroque high altar originally stood in the collegiate church.

The church is also shown from the inside as part of the night watchman tours.
