"The place of the invisible memorial is the forecourt of Saarbrücken Castle. It was inaugurated in Saarbrücken in 1993.The concept of an invisible memorial goes back to an initiative by art professor Jochen Gerz and several students who, between April 1990 and May 1993, began secretly and illegally to carve names of Jewish cemeteries into the paving stones of the palace square in Saarbrücken Castle and then to use these stones with the lettering down, to be reinserted into the existing pavement. They chose the forecourt of the palace because there was a Gestapo control center there during the National Socialist period. The idea was subsequently taken up by the City Association of Saarbrücken, which decided in August 1991 to realize such a monument. A total of 2,146 place names of Jewish cemeteries that existed up until 1933 were milled into the dark cobblestones of the middle strip of Schlossplatz and sunk into the ground. The memorial was handed over to the public on May 23, 1993 and since then can only be recognized by the inconspicuously attached signs to the place of the invisible memorial. This is intended to symbolize the suppression of history.”From Wikipedia: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platz_des_Unsichtbaren_MahnmalsFurther information: regionalverband-saarbruecken.de/mahnmal
