The fortified church was built in the mid-14th century as a place of refuge for the villagers and was probably built the same size as the nave. The eastern choir room was added around 1500. It is considered one of the oldest churches in Saxony. In 1905 the church council decided to demolish the fortified church in the center of the village, which had meanwhile become too small and dilapidated, in order to build a new church on this site. After friends of old monuments had successfully campaigned for the preservation of the fortified church, demolition and reconstruction began in June 1906 on the cemetery 400m away as a burial chapel. As early as August 1906, the shell of the building was in a new location, and in March 1907 the fortified church was completed and consecrated. Between 1618 - 1623 it was renovated on a large scale and partly rebuilt. The gallery may also have been built in at that time and the planks of it provided with New Testament pictures. After the church no longer had to serve as a defensive castle, the church door and some windows were enlarged or newly introduced in the 18th century. On September 12, 2004, the church was reconsecrated in a service after extensive interior renovations.
