Schweinsberg Castle is a hilltop castle on a small basalt cone of around 215 m above sea level. NHN.
In the 12th century, the area of today's Schweinsberg was still the property of the von Merlau family and, through the marriage of the knight Guntram Vogt with a sister of the knight Eberhard von Merlau, came into the possession of the later Schenken zu Schweinsberg. Around 1230/31, at the time of St. Elisabeth of Thuringia, Guntram's son, Guntram von Marburg and von Grünberg, the landgrave of Thuringia, built a castle on the small basalt cone. Guntram took on the name "von Schweinsberg" and was ordered by the Landgrave of Thuringia, the German King Heinrich Raspe IV., To give the Hessian inheritance.

Schweinsberg Castle can be seen from afar. Unfortunately, it is privately owned, so you can only view it from the outside. You have to turn back at the castle gate. But I have fond memories of the old Baron Schenk zu Schweinsberg, who used to often visit my parents when I was little. I don't know whether he lived in the castle, though.
